Anatoly Aksakov: Russia and China’s digital currencies could be made compatible

The chairman of the State Duma’s Financial Markets Committee said that digital currencies from Russia and China could be used together for international settlements.

“We in the State Duma very much expect that the digital currencies of the central banks of the states will be actively used in foreign economic turnover. Accordingly, it will be possible to use our digital ruble for international settlements,” Aksakov said.

It’s good when state digital currency systems are interconnected and transactions in different CBDCs move freely through them, said the head of the committee responsible in the Duma for considering a package of bills on cryptocurrencies;

“There may be considered options for compatibility of systems. For example, Chinese and ours – to ensure the conversion of the two digital currencies and their use in the economic turnover of both countries,” Aksakov reasoned.

The senior parliamentarian has already said that one of the applications of the digital ruble will be international settlements with China.

Last Wednesday, July 11, the State Duma passed a bill on introducing the digital ruble into the banking system in its second and final third reading at once. The CBR, which is assigned the status of CBDC platform operator, will have the right to refuse any commercial bank to conduct a transaction;

The head of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said that widespread use of the state digital currency will be possible from the beginning of 2025.
