Australians considered “easy prey” for crypto scam call centers

Australians have become prime targets for crypto scam call centers due to a perception that they are easy prey. Former call center worker Mark revealed that Australians were the main focus of scam calls during his time at a crypto scam company in Ukraine. He explained that Australians were seen as having good money and salaries, making them attractive targets. In contrast, Americans were avoided by call centers due to fear of the FBI. Private investigator Ken Gamble noted that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) historically have not pursued these scammers, making it harder to tackle the spread of scams. In 2023 alone, around 8,600 reports of scams, including crypto scams, were made in Australia, resulting in losses of approximately $206 million. While the AFP is making efforts to disrupt these criminal organizations, challenges remain in handling the high volume of fraud entering Australia daily.
