Binance and Tokocrypto Jointly Collaborate With Indonesian Authorities to Uncover Major Cryptocurrency Fraud and Confiscate $200K
In a groundbreaking partnership, Binance and Tokocrypto have joined forces with Indonesia’s Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) to successfully disrupt a significant scam operation. The collaborative effort resulted in the identification of multiple suspects involved in a pig butchering scam network and the seizure of $200,000 in illicit funds.
The investigation initially focused on a suspected trading fraud case related to a crypto trading website. However, it soon became evident that the website was merely a front for fraudulent activities. During the course of the operation, law enforcement authorities apprehended individuals responsible for managing the accounts used to receive the stolen funds. The suspects were found in possession of approximately 50 mobile phones, numerous local bank cards, and banking apps on their devices. Despite their reluctance to cooperate, forensic analysis revealed key wallet addresses controlled by the suspects, supported by evidence found in their communication records on platforms like Telegram.
Given the complexity of the case and the international nature of cryptocurrency transactions, Bareskrim initially sought assistance from Tokocrypto, which subsequently referred the investigation to Binance’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) for further analysis. This collaboration proved invaluable, with Binance’s experts playing a pivotal role throughout the operation.
Binance’s FIU, together with its partners, provided comprehensive analysis and support at every stage of the investigation, including the freezing of assets and the eventual seizure of the funds from the suspects’ accounts. The confiscated amount, totaling $200,000, has been handed over to the authorities, and one account holder has been arrested in connection with the case.
Nils Andersen Röed, Head of Binance FIU, emphasized the significance of public-private cooperation in combating financial crimes. He stressed the importance of communication channels between global law enforcement agencies, which facilitated the collaboration with Bareskrim. This joint effort allowed for the effective tracking and seizure of illicit funds, ensuring the continued security and reliability of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Ferry Maulana, an investigator at Bareskrim, expressed his commitment to fighting financial fraud and protecting the public. He acknowledged the crucial role played by Binance FIU and Tokocrypto in unraveling the complexities of the case and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The success of the operation can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Indonesian National Police team involved.
While the case is still ongoing, the operation serves as a testament to the effectiveness of public-private cooperation in tackling financial fraud, particularly within the cryptocurrency space. Tokocrypto’s VP of Legal, Compliance & Government Relations, Azizah Mutia Karim, affirmed the platform’s dedication to strengthening collaborative efforts against financial fraud in the cryptocurrency industry. She reiterated the importance of such partnerships in uncovering fraudulent activities and safeguarding the public, expressing Tokocrypto’s commitment to supporting and assisting initiatives aimed at combating crypto-related crimes.
Binance remains committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies worldwide to enhance security and protect users from fraud. In 2023 alone, Binance’s FIU processed over 58,000 law enforcement requests, demonstrating its capacity to handle a high volume of investigations. Through the Government Law Enforcement Request System, Binance served over 12,000 registered law enforcement officers worldwide within the same year.
