TON speaks out regarding the arrest of Telegram’s Pavel Durov in a Telegram crypto community. Durov was apprehended at Bourget airport, near Paris, due to concerns over Telegram’s lack of moderators and the potential for illicit activities on the platform. Despite Durov’s predicament, TON released a statement affirming its commitment to “freedom of speech and decentralization,” emphasizing that they will continue to operate without impediment. They called on the TON community to remain united and continue building. TON, an ambitious project initiated by Durov in 2017, aimed to develop its own blockchain and cryptocurrency called Gram. However, legal battles with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission resulted in Telegram’s withdrawal from the TON project. Nevertheless, a group of open-source developers named “NewTON” picked up where Telegram left off, following the concepts outlined in the TON whitepaper. The objective of TON was to build a high-performance blockchain capable of handling millions of transactions per second, leveraging Telegram’s vast user base to facilitate seamless crypto adoption within the app.
