Financial manager from Hong Kong lost millions of dollars as a result of crypto fraud

Financial manager from Hong Kong lost 17 million Hong Kong dollars ($2 million) as a result of fraud. A 57-year-old woman invested in cryptocurrencies on a fictitious trading platform.

Last spring, the manager received a message from someone she worked with before.. The former financier convinced a friend to open an account on the trading platform and invest in gold and cryptocurrency. The woman, whose name local law enforcement officers prefer not to reveal, invested a huge amount of money on the advice of a former colleague.

The financial manager earned about $330,000 from crypto investments in just three months, as the exchange operators claimed. When the victim of the scam decided to withdraw part of the funds, she was required to pay an additional $130,000 of some administrative fee. Only afterwards did the woman realize that she had become a victim of scammers and wrote a statement to the Hong Kong police.

Earlier, Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) warned the public about fraudulent organizations posing as the well-known cryptocurrency exchange MEXC.
