Ripple CTO David Schwartz has criticized billionaire Elon Musk over his contradictory stance on free speech. Schwartz argues that while Musk claims to believe in free speech, his actions indicate a narrow understanding of the subject. The criticism stems from a federal court dismissing a lawsuit filed by Musk’s microblogging platform X against the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). Musk filed the lawsuit in response to studies conducted by CCDH that highlighted an increase in hate speech on X since Musk acquired the platform. The court dismissed the lawsuit, stating that it was an attempt to silence critics of the platform. Schwartz highlights this ruling as evidence of Musk’s contradictory stance on free speech, as the lawsuit sought to punish individuals for engaging in protected speech that Musk disapproved of. Schwartz argues that Musk’s understanding of free speech is comically limited, despite Musk’s claims of being a “free speech absolutist.” Musk has also pursued lawsuits against other groups, such as Bright Data and Media Matters for America, further supporting Schwartz’s criticism.
