British Columbia Court Backs Ban on Crypto Mining in Canadian Province

A court in British Columbia, Canada, has upheld a ban on crypto mining in the province, ruling that it is reasonable and within the boundaries set by the Utilities Commission Act. The ban, which was enacted in December 2022, was being challenged by Conifex Timber, a forestry company that had ventured into crypto mining. The company had planned a mining operation with an indigenous tribe, but the court sided with B.C Hydro’s argument that the ban was necessary to preserve affordable energy access for the broader population. Conifex expressed disappointment, believing that the ban is a missed opportunity for the province. British Columbia is home to several zero-carbon footprint mining projects, including one that utilizes orphaned power from a hydroelectric plant in an abandoned mining town.
