Citizen Digital: Worldcoin in talks to resume operations in Kenya

The controversial Worldcoin project is making a comeback in Kenya after being banned by authorities due to privacy concerns. In a recent development, the project leaders have successfully negotiated an agreement with the government, allowing them to resume operations under new regulations, according to reliable sources within government circles.

According to one source, the resumption of work is expected to take place in early 2024, with Worldcoin actively collaborating with regulators to comply with Kenyan requirements.

“Work could resume in early 2024. Worldcoin is working directly with regulators to meet Kenyan requirements,” one of the sources said.

Worldcoin, a project launched by Tools for Humanity, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, made its debut earlier this year in multiple countries, including Kenya.

However, in August, the Kenyan government suspended Worldcoin amid concerns over privacy violations and the misuse of citizens’ personal data. Shortly after, a bipartisan committee was formed to investigate the project’s activities.

The committee recommended that the company’s physical presence in Kenya be suspended until proper regulations for virtual assets and service providers are established. Worldcoin’s press service, however, stated that they had not received any official communication from the committee.
