Damus will continue to offer the “zaps” feature despite Apple’s restrictions

  • The team said there’s nothing Apple can do to stop the feature
  • On June 15, the schedule of daily zaps on the platform reached over a million

The developers of the alternative Twitter app said they will continue working and offering their “zaps” feature, even despite a warning from Apple. Earlier this week, the tech giant announced that it may remove Damus because of its zaps feature, which allows you to send tips related to receiving digital content from creators.

Damus team representatives said that Apple has no way to influence the use of Bitcoin Lightning on their platform. They showed a screenshot that clearly shows that the schedule of daily zaps on the platform, reached over a million on June 15.

On June 13, in a statement, Apple said that using zaps to pay for digital content is against their requirements, as only the in-app purchase mechanism is allowed.

The head of Square, Jack Dorsey, said, however, that zaps are not related to the sale of digital content; instead, they are a form of feedback. Recalling Apple CEO Tim Cook, Jack Dorsey asked why Apple is restricting people from using bitcoin for these purposes.

Damus itself posted a bold tweet that writes:

“They are actively fighting against the principle of open protocols.. Restricting any way users can send ‘zaps’ on our app will only harm our customer base for no good reason or benefit.”
