In Dagestan, an underground miner stole energy worth 12 million rubles

In a joint operation, law enforcement agencies in Makhachkala, along with Rosseti Northern Caucasus, made a startling discovery – a massive underground mining farm cleverly hidden in an underground garage of a high-rise building.

To everyone’s surprise, it was revealed that a 35-year-old resident of the apartment building had surreptitiously set up over 620 cryptocurrency mining devices in the underground garage and had illegally tapped into power lines. The calculated damage caused by the electricity theft amounted to a staggering 12 million rubles.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan’s press service, the illicit cryptocurrency mining operation was tucked away within the underground parking garage of a Nasrutdinova Street apartment building in the Reduktorny village. The authorities successfully uncovered a sophisticated mining farm containing over 620 cryptocurrency mining machines.

Presently, the police are diligently investigating the incident under the purview of Part 2, Article 165 of the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code, which deals with causing property damage to the owner through deception without signs of theft, particularly when organized groups are involved, resulting in substantial financial losses. If found guilty, the underground miner could face a potential prison sentence of up to 5 years.

It is important to note that the additional strain on the electrical grid caused by Dagestan’s miners has led to significant disruptions in the energy network. Recently, energy workers in the region have publicly called upon mining farm owners to cease their operations and power down their equipment.
