In Russia, energy retail companies began to identify illegal miners in residential buildings

The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy said that subordinate organizations have learned to identify consumers who use electricity not for domestic needs, but for cryptocurrency mining.

In an interview with Izvestia, Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Snikkars said that Russian power engineers have learned to identify illegal miners by increasing energy consumption and changing the load profile at substations. Thus, the department began to receive data sufficient to prosecute miners who place their farms in residential buildings and consume electricity at preferential rates for the population.. Snikkars noted that Irkutsk power engineers were the first to detect illegal connections.

“When suspicions arise, an inspector is sent to the apartment to check the power plants.. After that, the tenants will either be issued a new bill for the price of electricity for the business, or they will prove this fact through the court, ”he said.

To recognize the fact of entrepreneurial activity, it is enough to establish a discrepancy between the volume of electricity consumption and the average monthly rate. For example, when a tenant consumes more than 30-40% of the consumption of an apartment building or due to a sharp increase in electricity consumption. According to the legal service of the Ministry of Energy, at least 10 cases are already known when energy sales companies were able to recover from miners the difference in the tariff cost of electricity for households and businesses.

Recall that since November, the State Duma of the Russian Federation has been coordinating the draft law “On Amendments to the Federal Law on Digital Financial Assets, Digital Currency and on Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation”. It involves the legalization of mining in Russia, and also establishes the rules for calculating income and paying taxes.. According to the proposal of the deputies, the mined crypto assets can be sold through foreign platforms or through the Russian system, which will be created as part of an experimental legal regime.
