ITEM Systems to install non-fungible item plaque at mural of cultural significance in Brazil

ITEM Systems, a company specializing in non-fungible item technology, has recently revealed its plans to install a unique bronze plaque at a culturally significant mural in Santos, Brazil. The mural commemorates the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Italian immigrants from Genoa to the region. Taking inspiration from DENVER WALLS, the plaque will provide visitors with tap-and-scan functionality, allowing them to access information about the artwork, its artists, and its cultural importance to the area.

Named “A Sea of Hope,” the mural forms part of a local initiative to restore and invigorate the Valongo neighborhood in the heart of Santos through the deployment of public art and educational endeavors. The mural was unveiled on March 2, 2024, in the presence of the Mayor of Santos and the Deputy Mayor of Genoa.

Created by a collaboration of three artists, including two Brazilians and an Italian immigrant living in Santos, the mural tells the story of immigration, symbolizing the journey of an Italian woman from Genoa alongside various cultural elements from both cities.

In a clever nod to cultural significance, the mural was painted on a building that once housed the Italian Consulate, which stands on Tuiuti Street, facing the forthcoming Valongo Park. This location holds historical importance as it served as the arrival point for numerous immigrants in Santos via the city’s port.

Upon tapping or scanning the installed bronze plaque, visitors will be directed to an interactive map accessible through a mobile web app. This map will guide users to intriguing destinations within the city and provide information about local businesses partnering with the project.

The crafting of the ITEM Systems NFI plaque is currently underway, with an expected installation date in March 2024. Excitingly, authorities in Genoa have already expressed their intention to support the creation of a sister mural referencing the city of Santos.
