Kenya has suspended Worldcoin’s operations in the country

  • The country has already launched an investigation into Worldcoin.
  • Security agencies will try to figure out how the firm intends to use the data collected.

Kenya’s Interior Ministry announced it has suspended cryptocurrency project Worldcoin from operating in its territory to conduct an assessment of potential risks to public safety, Reuters reported.

Home Affairs Minister Kiture Kindiki said:

“Security, financial and data protection authorities have already launched an investigation to verify the legality of the company’s activities.”

Kindiki said the government was concerned about Worldcoin’s activities and said that as part of the investigation, security agencies would try to find out exactly how the company intended to use the data collected. He added that action would be taken against anyone involved in the project.

Citing local media, Reuters reported that as of August 1, more than 350,000 Kenyans had registered on the Worldcoin platform and received free tokens worth about 7,000 Kenyan shillings (about $50 at the time of writing).

Remember, since its launch on July 24, the Worldcoin project has faced investigations in Germany, France and the UK.
