Media: French regulator questioned the legality of Worldcoin’s biometric data collection

  • Media previously reported that Worldcoin has come under the crosshairs of a U.K. regulator.
  • As of this writing, the CNIL is investigating.

France’s National Commission for Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) said the legality of biometric data collection in the Worldcoin project “appears questionable,” Reuters reported.

The CNIL’s response, emailed to the agency, said:

“The legality of such data collection appears questionable, as do the conditions under which biometric data is stored.”

Also this week, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said it plans to conduct its own investigation into the Worldcoin project.

Reminder, the Worldcoin mainnet was released on July 24th. Earlier, Sam Altman, the project’s founder, announced a strong user demand for the technology. One person is verified every 8 seconds, he said.
