Op-ed: Funding isn’t the core solution to bridging the gender gap in Web3

Op-ed: Unlocking the Full Potential of Women in Web3

Web3 has always prided itself on being an inclusive and empowering community. As someone who has transitioned from traditional finance to DeFi, I can attest to the overwhelming support and guidance I have received. As a female leader, I have not encountered any significant obstacles or adversity.

However, the recent discussions surrounding the gender gap in Web3 have shone a light on the undeniable disparities that exist. With only 13% of founding teams in Web3 including at least one woman, and a mere 3.5% of Web3 investment reaching women-led businesses, it is clear that there is work to be done.

While increased funding for female startups is valuable, it is not a complete solution. We need to embrace a multi-sided approach that empowers women in Web3 on a day-to-day basis. Here are three areas to consider:

1. Embracing fear: Blockchain technology and decentralized ecosystems can be intimidating, but women should approach them with curiosity and excitement. Rather than allowing feelings of inadequacy to hold us back, we should recognize our unique abilities to learn and adapt. By acquiring knowledge and asking questions with confidence, we can dissolve boundaries and level the playing field.

2. Leveraging existing experience: We should not underestimate the value of the expertise, leadership skills, and knowledge we bring from Web2 industries. Women in Web3 should self-advocate for the strengths they have acquired throughout their careers. By identifying and utilizing these strengths, we can enhance our learning and contribute in meaningful ways.

3. Building connections: Web3 thrives on ideas and creativity, regardless of who they come from. Women should actively seek and embrace opportunities to form partnerships and connections. The collaborative and inclusive environment within Web3 communities provides fertile ground for exponential innovation. By nurturing these connections and fostering unity, we can overcome gender divides and propel the entire ecosystem forward.

Inclusion must be a priority as Web3 progresses and evolves. Women have a vital role to play in shaping the landscape of regulatory frameworks, creative industries, education, and digital asset development. While funding is important, we do not have to wait for it to take the lead. The community is ready to support and nurture our efforts.

Initiative, confidence, and commitment will be the driving forces behind bridging the gender gap and unlocking the full potential of women in Web3. Let us seize the opportunity and steer the ship towards a more diverse and inclusive future.
