Poll: 85% of Russians know almost nothing about the introduction of the digital ruble

A VTsIOM poll conducted especially for the Vedomosti newspaper found that the majority of Russians know almost nothing about the new law on the digital ruble and the authorities’ plans for its mass introduction in 2025.

The survey, which was conducted on July 30, involved 1,600 Russians. As it turned out, only 15% of respondents know that the authorities have adopted a law on a new form of national currency. 55% responded that they had “heard something” but did not know the details. And 30% said they heard about it for the first time from pollsters.

More than half of respondents (51%) could not answer why a digital ruble is needed. Among those who found it difficult to answer are people with incomplete secondary education (75%), as well as active TV viewers (71%). Although the older generation has heard of the digital ruble, only 63% have a clear idea of why the new currency is needed.

The Association of Russian Banks (ARB) recently addressed the Russian Central Bank, saying that market participants still have many questions about the digital ruble and its regulation. Earlier, Olga Skorobogatova, the first deputy governor of the Bank of Russia, said that the authorities would not organize total surveillance of the country’s citizens with the help of the digital ruble.
