Solana Foundation Asserts Core Network Should Be Permissionless Regarding Offensive Meme Coin Issues

The Solana Foundation has addressed the issue of offensive meme coins on its blockchain, stating that the core components of Solana should remain permissionless. According to Austin Federa, the head of strategy at the Solana Foundation, the responsibility of blocking offensive assets should be left to individual applications. Federa compared this issue to how internet service providers handle potentially harmful content, saying that the filtering should occur at the application level rather than the protocol level. He emphasized that the base layer of the network should remain open and neutral, allowing apps to implement necessary filters and block lists. While some argued that ISPs are obligated to block illegal content, Federa stressed the importance of supporting free speech in line with blockchain principles. This discussion arose after several offensive and potentially racist meme coins were created on Solana’s network.
