Buy Or Sell Bitcoin? Quant Reveals What Leading Metric Says

Deciding whether to buy or sell Bitcoin can be a challenging task, but a quant has shed light on a potential leading indicator that could provide insights into the cryptocurrency’s future price movements. The metric in question is known as the Bitcoin Coinbase Premium, which tracks the price difference between Coinbase (USD pair) and Binance (USDT pair) exchanges.

When the Coinbase Premium is positive, it indicates that the price on Coinbase is higher than that on Binance, suggesting stronger buying pressure on the former platform. Conversely, a negative premium implies more selling pressure on Coinbase as the asset trades at a lower price there.

Analyzing the trend in the 30-day moving average (MA) of the Bitcoin Coinbase Premium, the quant discovered that this indicator has recently been declining. However, it still remains positive overall, albeit approaching the neutral zero mark. This suggests that institutional traders on Coinbase have supported Bitcoin during its rally, as Coinbase is known to be popular among US-based institutional entities.

Interestingly, the quant observed a pattern over the last two years, where a reversal in the Coinbase Premium from negative to positive territory coincided with a rebound in Bitcoin’s price. This pattern played out earlier this year, leading to a rally that eventually broke the cryptocurrency’s all-time high.

Currently, the Coinbase Premium is experiencing a downtrend, but it has not yet entered negative territory. The analyst suggests that Bitcoin is in a “wait and see” phase, indicating that a rebound may take some time. According to historical patterns, the metric needs to decline further and reach a reversal point for the trend to repeat.

Bitcoin recently dipped below $61,000 but has since seen a modest rebound, returning above $62,700. As market participants navigate the decision of buying or selling Bitcoin, monitoring the Coinbase Premium trend may offer valuable insights into its future movements.
