South Korea eyes blockchain tech to streamline job application process

South Korea is looking into leveraging blockchain technology to streamline the job application process. As part of its efforts to enhance its digital economy, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) is planning to equip its citizens with skills in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and blockchain. The “Comprehensive Plan to Nurture Digital Talent” aims to deepen the talent pool in South Korea and keep up with other jurisdictions in emerging technologies. The demand for employees with digital skills is predicted to rise to 738,000 in five years, prompting the government to focus on developing local talent. The government plans to overhaul the educational curriculum, introducing courses in blockchain, AI, metaverse, and cybersecurity in high schools and tertiary institutions. Additionally, training programs will be implemented to serve as a talent pipeline for industry players. To facilitate the job application process, the government is introducing blockchain-based digital badges that will electronically store and verify applicants’ degrees and qualifications, eliminating the need for paperwork. The initiative is supported by the Korea Employment Information Service, the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, and the Korea Internet and Security Agency. The government aims to provide tangible convenience and efficiency for citizens engaged in job-seeking activities through the digital badge service.
