The authorities of the city of Prospera in Honduras recognized Bitcoin as a means of payment.

The privately owned city of Prospera in Honduras has recently made a groundbreaking decision to lift restrictions on the use of Bitcoin in transactions, making it an accepted currency for accounting, tax payments, and debt denominations.

Prospera is known as a special economic zone where innovative experiments, including those with currency, are encouraged. The local regulations have been adjusted to grant Bitcoin the same status as traditional financial instruments, allowing individuals and legal entities to use it for purchases, debt repayment, and other financial obligations.

“We firmly believe in the fundamental right to financial and monetary freedom. The residents of Prospera should have the liberty to engage in transactions, maintain accounting records, and report taxes in any currency of their choosing,” expressed Jorge Colindres, the city administration chief, regarding the decision.

The managers of the economic zone expect that the recognition of Bitcoin as a valid currency will significantly contribute to the growth of the local circular economy, opening up ample opportunities for both citizens and businesses.

Furthermore, a commercial project called Bitcoin Valley was launched in the popular Honduran resort town of Santa Lucia in 2023 to attract tourists. This project includes cafes, shops, and companies that have announced their acceptance of various cryptocurrencies as payment for goods and services.
