The U.S. Department of Defense will implement AI for the Army’s needs

  • The U.S. Department of Defense will study artificial intelligence (AI).
  • A special task force will be created to integrate AI into the nation’s security system.

The U.S. Department of Defense said it is beginning work on generative artificial intelligence (AI). Task Force Lima will develop the new direction.

The agency said the initiative reflects the Defense Department’s commitment to responsible and strategic use of AI capabilities. “Lima will focus on analyzing and integrating large language models (LLMs) into the nation’s security system.

“By leveraging the power of AI, we will focus on ensuring national security and minimizing risk. The future of defense is not just about deploying advanced technology, but also about being forward-thinking, responsible, and aware of the implications for our nation,” added Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks.

The document states that generative AI models will help the department develop areas such as warfighting, business relationships, health care, and policy. The mission will be led by U.S. Navy Captain Manuel Xavier Lugo.

“The Department of Defense needs to responsibly address the deployment of generative AI models while identifying appropriate protective measures and mitigating national security risks,” said DOD Chief of Digital and Artificial Technologies Craig Martell.

The Defense Department’s Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) began operations in June 2022. The department is responsible for developing and deploying data to enable scalable AI-based solutions for enterprises and protecting the country from various threats.

Goldman Sachs has previously suggested that investment in AI could reach $200bn by 2025. Arthur Hayes expects artificial intelligence to revolutionize DAO.
