- This is how the country bypassed the regional blocking
- The service costs only about $30
- Worldcoin is aware of the problem and has already taken certain steps to solve it
- In particular, the company has changed the user registration mechanism
The Worldcoin project is not even out yet, but is already in the middle of a scandal.. Hacking into the potentially “most secure” biometric verification system is easy – just buy someone else’s retinal scan.
We have previously reported in detail about Worldcoin. The project is co-founded by Sam Altman of OpenAI. In mid-March, the company unveiled World ID, a biometric user verification system.
The organization plans to release its own token later this year.
A retinal scanner, two-factor authentication, a branded wallet and a global cryptocurrency are designed to create an unprecedented payment system.
But it’s not as secure as it seems. In China, where the Worldcoin app is not yet available, they found a way around the blockage. Local users buy retinal scans of African residents for $30 apiece.
According to Block Beats Asia. Worldcoin later confirmed the information, saying that there are “only” a couple of hundred cases.
As the company constantly monitors the security situation and keeps track of such precedents. The organization has also changed a little the mechanism of registration by introducing QR codes.
But already now it is clear that these measures are not enough.. There are quite a few holes in the system, and this provides room for fraudulent activities.
