Fox Business correspondent was caught promoting a fake XRP giveaway

A senior correspondent for the Fox Business television show attempted to criticize Ripple, while inadvertently spreading a fraudulent tweet about the XRP token giveaway.

Charles Gasparino commented on the tweet, which was posted from a fraudulent account. It said that cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has re-listed XRP on the platform and announced a free giveaway of the coin in appreciation of the XRP community.

Gasparino wrote in the comments that XRP and Ripple are now living “separate lives”. Gasparino’s tweet has already racked up about 597,500 views. Twitter users pointed out to him that the journalist had quoted the scammers, further spreading the post of the attackers. XRP supporters declared that Gasparino had earned the title of “the greatest laughingstock in Fox News history.”

However, Ripple CTO David Schwartz stood up for the Fox reporter, explaining that it’s now very difficult to tell a fake Twitter user from a real one. Attackers have become more likely to lure people into their schemes through accounts with a blue check mark, which used to prove the authenticity of the account.

“It’s a shame there’s no way to determine which accounts are genuine and which are not. Then people wouldn’t be fooled by such senseless misinformation,” the top Ripple manager complained.

Last week, David Schwartz already warned about fake XRP coin giveaways. These schemes are organized by scammers looking to capitalize on the hype surrounding Ripple’s partial victory in a legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
