Massive Crypto Thefts in Q1 2023: $255.8 Million Stolen

According to data from PeckShield, cyber attackers managed to steal a total of $211.5 million worth of cryptocurrencies and $10.9 million worth of NFTs in March of this year.

One of the most significant attacks occurred at Euler Finance DeFi, where hackers exploited a vulnerability in the protocol’s smart contracts, resulting in a loss of $197 million.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, the conscientious hackers returned $177 million out of the stolen funds, with the intention of returning the remaining Euler funds as well.

Meanwhile, Safemoon, a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange based on the BNB Chain network, suffered a hack that resulted in the withdrawal of approximately $9 million from the liquidity pool.

Other notable attacks in March include ParaSpace ($5.2 million) and the General Bytes ATM ATM network ($1.7 million).

In total, the first few months of 2023 have seen a total of $255.8 million worth of cryptocurrencies being stolen, with $35.5 million worth of assets being stolen in February alone.

February 11 saw the highest number of attacks, with a total of 141 incidents recorded. The United Nations also submitted a report to the North Korean Sanctions Committee in February, revealing that North Korean hackers had stolen more crypto assets in 2022 than in any other year.

It was also discovered that the same hackers were responsible for the theft of $630 million to $1 billion in crypto assets from foreign aerospace and defense companies last year.
