Open interest in Ethereum options on CME reached a new record

  • It was $254 million
  • With options trading volume dropping slightly in June

Open interest in Ethereum options on the CME renewed all-time highs. According to The Block, it was $254 million in June.

The Open Interest (OI) metric captures the total number of active Ethereum futures or options contracts in the market. This is a measure of the amount of money invested in ETH derivatives at a given point in time.

The most recent OI record was after the Shapella update activated.

In June, open interest in bitcoin options also increased, but did not reach historical records. It was $1.59 billion.. That’s down from April’s OI for options in BTC (then it reached $1.69 billion).

Options trading volumes on ether in June declined. At the same time, we see a significant increase in the annual total. In January 2023, trading volumes were $84 million, peaking at $334 million in May.

By June, bitcoin options trading volume rose for the third consecutive month. But those numbers are still below the March peak.

SME launched options on Ethereum in September 2022. And since 2021, the platform has been trading ether futures. They also offer options and futures on bitcoin.

The CME Group last week announced plans to launch ETH/BTC futures.. These futures allow investors to access both ether and bitcoin in a single transaction. At this point, regulators have begun reviewing the application.
