Paris Match, the renowned French magazine, has taken a unique step to celebrate its 75th anniversary by auctioning off 75 iconic archival photos as Ethereum non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The auction, which began on June 17, features a curated selection of historic images from the magazine’s archives, including snapshots of entertainment legends like The Rolling Stones, Jack Nicholson, Orson Welles, and John Travolta. It also includes images of significant historical moments such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and scenes from Harlem and the Tour de France.
What sets this auction apart is that each NFT purchase will come with a numbered and signed physical print of the same photo, bridging the gap between traditional art collecting and digital ownership. Bidding for each photo starts at 0.3 ETH, or approximately $1,062.
This is not Paris Match’s first foray into the world of NFTs. The magazine previously sold 120 unique NFTs in January 2023 and has partnered with the photo NFT platform Focus Bloc and SuperRare for this auction.
The global NFT sales volume has seen a 45% surge to $19.25 million in the last 24 hours, with Ethereum leading the way at $7.19 million in sales, followed by Polygon and Bitcoin. Ethereum’s current price stands at $3,492.60, reflecting a 7% decline over the past month.
Paris Match’s decision to embrace NFT technology and auction its iconic photographic archives showcases its commitment to preserving its cultural legacy while adapting to the digital era. As Ethereum remains dominant in the NFT sector, capturing 72.3% of the market share, it faces competition from emerging blockchains like Solana, Bitcoin, and Immutable X. Despite Ethereum’s advantages in infrastructure and recognition, it is actively tackling scalability challenges through initiatives like transitioning to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and implementing layer-2 solutions like rollups. Solana, on the other hand, stands out for its lower gas fees and faster transaction speeds, positioning itself as a strong contender to Ethereum.
