Santa Cruz County Approves Blockchain Pilot Program for Government Services

  • It’s part of a blockchain pilot program
  • It launches in summer 2023
  • Through the wallet, residents will be able to pay for parking and register bikes

Santa Cruz County, California, has approved a proposal to implement some blockchain solutions statewide.

This is a pilot project that starts in July 2023. Its point is to convert some government services and documentation into a cryptographic format.

So, the Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors approved a program that consists of three phases. In the first phase, they will launch a digital wallet from the developers of Humbl.

The app will go into beta test. There users will be able to pay for some public services. For example, the wallet would be needed to pay for parking or register a bicycle.

Tests will be completed in September, after which the authorities will receive a report on its results (second phase).

If the pilot is successful, more public services will be added to the digital wallet (the third phase of the program). For example, building applications, pet registrations, etc.

The digital wallet project has been in development since April 2022. To do so, the Santa Cruz County Council partnered with developer HUMBL.

California became one of the states that passed blockchain development legislation. It allows local authorities to keep records and provide services using cryptography.

The other day, California developed a project to legalize the DAO. But it still needs to be discussed in different branches of government.
