Vitalik Buterin urged caution regarding the implementation of AI in blockchain

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted the importance of careful consideration when incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) systems into blockchain-based projects. He stressed the need for caution especially when developing applications associated with significant risk and financial flows.

Buterin also cautioned against potential vulnerabilities and risks associated with AI oracles in prediction markets or stablecoins, emphasizing that massive financial losses can occur if these oracles are susceptible to attacks.

“It is crucial to exercise caution. If an AI-based oracle is used in a prediction market or stablecoin and is compromised, a significant amount of money can be stolen almost instantly,” warned Buterin.

Despite the risks, Buterin acknowledged the potential benefits of AI in certain contexts. For example, AI assistants can enhance user interfaces, improve industry understanding, and aid in detecting fraudulent activities.

“While entirely AI-based interfaces are currently too risky due to increased error probability, incorporating AI in traditional interfaces is feasible,” explained the developer.

Buterin believes that the primary challenge lies in developing a unified system capable of supporting AI, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies for use in various applications.

“The most demanding applications are those aiming to create a decentralized and trusted AI that other applications rely on. This presents security and centralization risks,” Buterin concluded.

Previously, Buterin proposed increasing the maximum gas volume in Ethereum’s network blocks by 33% to improve blockchain efficiency.
