Sotheby's: digital art sales in 2023 amounted to $35 million

According to Sotheby’s Vice President Michael Buanna, the auction house has had a tremendously successful year. The sales of digital art have soared to approximately $35 million, making it a standout year for Sotheby’s.

“We are thrilled to announce that 2023 will continue to shine brightly for digital art at Sotheby’s! Our achievements speak for themselves, with sales reaching an impressive $35 million,” stated Michael Bouhanna during an interview.

Reflecting on the year, Buanna mentioned that Sotheby’s organized a groundbreaking auction dedicated solely to digital art, which attracted over 300 participants and generated a staggering $12 million in revenue. Furthermore, the auction house set a new price record in the digital space with the sale of Dmitry Chernyak’s NFT titled Ringers #879 (The Goose) for a remarkable $6.2 million.

In a remarkable turn of events, Sotheby’s also auctioned off a collection of 500 NFTs named Themes and Variations by Vera Molnar, a pioneer in using computers for artistic creation, who happens to be 99 years old.

Looking ahead, Buanna emphasized that Sotheby’s will be dedicated to supporting creators and enhancing their strategies in the primary market.

Most recently, in June of this year, Sotheby’s sold an NFT called “Golden Goose” from the GRAILS collection, previously owned by the failed cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, for an astounding $6.2 million.
