Human Rights Foundation to donate 20 BTC to improve Bitcoin’s protocol

The nonprofit organization Human Rights Foundation (HRF) will give 20 bitcoins (more than half a million dollars) to developers to improve the Bitcoin protocol.

The foundation recently officially launched a bug-finding contest to support the development of Bitcoin’s open source code. The contest will end in 519 days, according to the association’s website.

Each reward is worth 2 BTC (nearly $60,000) and is aimed at solving a specific problem Bitcoin is facing today. Six rewards are aimed at improving mobile wallets.

According to HRF chief strategy officer Alex Gladstein, the program should accelerate the development of additional features of the Bitcoin protocol.

“HRF views Bitcoin and financial freedom as an aspect of the fight for human rights. The fact is that human rights defenders are constantly under attack through their bank accounts. Bitcoin allows them to keep working,” he said.

Gladstein recently said the first cryptocurrency could limit the power of states with “collapsed democracies” and take away their ability to control people.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and his Start Small foundation are also set to commit $5 million to support the first cryptocurrency ecosystem. The funds will be donated to Brink, a nonprofit organization that supports Bitcoin developers.
