Bitcoin Core Members Propose Spam Filtering for Taproot Transactions, Opposed by NFT Community

  • It should have been done months ago
  • Ali Sheriff and Luke Daschr
  • Influential members of the NFT community are opposed
  • In their opinion, this is an unwarranted attack on a promising trend

Bitcoin Core team members Ali Sheriff and Luke Daschr have argued for the integration of “spam filtering” into Taproot transactions.

This will block tokens based on the BRC-20 standard and NFT Ordinals, but will also take the strain off the network.

“I think everyone here knows what happened to the bitcoin meme in the last 96 hours.

Because of the sheer volume of third-party projects like BRC-20, real BTC transactions are overvalued, and that’s what’s causing massive overloads,” Ali Sheriff said.

Luke Dashjr expressed agreement with the proposal to block the troubled segment:

“We should have taken adequate action a couple months ago. Spam filtering has been standard practice at Bitcoin Core since day one.

I think it is a big mistake that the current limitations do not apply to Taproot transactions.”

The developers suggest implementing the change as a BIP or as an upgrade for the main network client..

In a comment for Decrypt, Dashjr said he could release the fix immediately, and he doesn’t need to wait for a soft fork to do so.

Founder of the DeGods NFT project Frank brought the Bitcoin Core members’ correspondence to public attention. In his opinion, blocking Ordinals would be a big mistake.

The head of the NFT division at Kraken, Washington Sanchez, called Luke’s actions a “solitary jihad.”

Like many others, he sees potential in both Ordinals and BRC-20, and therefore opposes blocking them.

He also emphasized the fact that Bitcoin is first and foremost a public project. Consequently, BC developers have no right to make such important decisions alone.

We remind you that due to the huge number of unconfirmed transactions in the Bitcoin network, the commissions jumped significantly.

At the beginning of the week, the average transfer fee exceeded the $19 mark.
