China Mobile’s Proposed Digital Identifier System Raises Privacy Concerns

  • Local telecom operator China Mobile has proposed creating a “digital identifier system” for all users of the meta-universe.
  • Experts say the proposal could violate basic privacy principles.

China Mobile, a Chinese state-owned telecom company, has proposed creating a “digital identifier system” for all users of the meta-universe and virtual worlds.

This is reported by Politico. The digital ID from China Mobile will contain personal data, occupation and other information about the user.

In addition, it is suggested that this information be stored and shared with law enforcement agencies to “ensure order and security in the virtual space.”

The proposal gave an example of the use of the technology. There’s a malicious user online named Tom who spreads rumors and chaos in the meta-universe, but he has an ID.

This digital identification system would allow police to quickly find and punish such users.

Experts who have researched the proposal said it could violate the basic principles of privacy and freedom of communication that are the hallmarks of the Internet.

“Giving each person a unique digital ID is very similar to China’s social credit system,” one expert said.

We previously reported that the number of daily users of the Internet is expected to increase by more than half a percent.
