Hong Kong Crypto Exchange Uses Elon Musk Deepfake to Promote Him as Lead Developer

Hong Kong-based crypto exchange uses an ingenious method to promote their platform by creating deepfake videos of Elon Musk, the famous entrepreneur. The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission has issued a warning about the rise of deepfake scams in the cryptocurrency industry, citing a group known as Quantum AI or AI Quantum as the culprits behind this deceitful tactic. These scammers utilize sophisticated AI algorithms to mimic Elon Musk’s facial expressions and voice, creating convincing video clips that portray him as the lead developer of their platform. To add credibility, the group also created a counterfeit news website to disseminate fabricated information about their services. The Hong Kong police have taken action against this group, shutting down their websites and social media pages. However, the full extent of the damage caused by these scams is still unknown. This incident is not the first time scammers have exploited deepfake videos featuring Elon Musk; in a separate case, a South Korean woman lost $50,000 to scammers impersonating Musk on Instagram. The prime minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, has also warned his social media followers about deepfake videos that use his voice and image to promote cryptocurrency scams. Such scams highlight the increasing sophistication of fraudsters in exploiting advanced AI technology for their illicit activities in the crypto industry.
