Conifex Timber takes legal action to lift ban on crypto mining in British Columbia

Conifex Timber, a Canadian company, has taken legal action by applying to the highest court in British Columbia to lift the local ban on the mining of cryptoassets.

The company is also demanding that the Hydroelectric Power Authority (BC Hydro) resume the supply of electricity in the required volume.

According to Conifex, the provincial government exceeded its authority delegated under the Utilities Commission Act by imposing restrictions on mining companies.

The company intends to seek the annulment of the order of the head of the Council of British Columbia and the recognition of this moratorium as unconstitutional, unauthorized, or otherwise invalid.

In addition to this, Conifex plans to demand compensation from BC Hydro for losses incurred due to the unjustified termination of mining projects.

The civil action notice claims that BC Hydro’s failure and refusal to provide services for Conifex’s mining projects is a breach of BC Hydro’s obligation to supply electricity and unfairly discriminates against Conifex when compared to other commercial customers.

BC Hydro, the state-owned electricity provider in the Canadian province of British Columbia, announced in December 2022 that it would stop processing new electricity applications from miners for 18 months based on a governor’s order.
