Google Authenticator Update Raises Security Concerns for Cryptocurrency Owners

  • Cryptocurrencies will be at risk
  • Now one-time codes are device-independent

Google announced an update to Google Authenticator for iOS and Android.

Users can now synchronize the verification codes generated by the authenticator with all Google accounts and devices. In addition, it will be possible to recover codes if you lose your device.

“We make logging into Google and all the apps and services you like easy and secure with built-in authentication tools,” the company said in a statement.

Blockchain security firm SlowMist said the feature is quite risky:

“Recently, Google Authenticator iOS released version 4.0 which supports cloud sync.  If you use this backup method, the mailbox will be at risk.

When access to the account is lost, the 2FA verification code can be stolen, creating a huge risk.”

This is why cryptocurrency owners should think twice before activating the new feature or sticking with the old backup solution
