Bitcoin Ordinals Size Record Broken Again—How Much Bigger Can They Get?

Bitcoin Ordinals and Runes platform OrdinalsBot has once again broken the record for the largest Ordinals inscription on the Bitcoin blockchain. The latest inscription, number 70,614,708, weighs in at a hefty 3.969 megabytes, surpassing the previous record set in March. This inscription contains a copy of “A Declaration of Independence in Cyberspace” by Logos Network.

The size of the inscription is not solely determined by the length of the document, but rather by the decision to publish it as an image that is large enough to read. According to Brian Laughlan, co-founder of OrdinalsBot, the actual text content of the inscription is only about 2 kilobytes in size. However, the image was blown up to achieve the massive size and make a statement.

While the size of the Bitcoin Ordinals inscriptions has been increasing, there are limitations to how much bigger they can get. The Bitcoin blockchain’s storage capacity was upgraded in 2017 with the Segregated Witness (SegWit) update, which increased the maximum block size from 1 megabyte to 4 megabytes. Any attempt to inscribe anything larger than 4 megabytes will fail.

To ensure that inscriptions do not exceed the block size limit, OrdinalsBot crafts the Ordinals locally, sends it to local Bitcoin nodes, and checks if it will go through. If the inscription is over 4 megabytes, it is disregarded as it will not be successful.

OrdinalsBot, which came online in January 2023, has been used for various inscription projects, including music Ordinals for artists like French Montana and Ghostface Killah. For larger inscription projects, such as the Logos Network Declaration, OrdinalsBot collaborates with Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital to add larger amounts of data to a single Bitcoin blockchain block.

With over 200,000 users on its platform, OrdinalsBot claims to have played a part in creating eight out of the top 10 largest files ever inscribed on Bitcoin. The platform also provides backend support for Magic Eden’s inscription services and recently launched the Trio Ordinals utility token using the BRC-20 Bitcoin token standard.

As the Bitcoin blockchain’s storage capacity is already at its limit, it remains to be seen how much bigger Ordinals inscriptions can get in the future. However, OrdinalsBot’s continuous innovations and collaborations suggest that they will continue to push the boundaries and make history in the world of Bitcoin inscriptions.
