Kazakhstan uncovered a scheme to buy cryptocurrencies for fake dollars

Kazakhstani law enforcers seized counterfeit $20300 that the attackers were going to sell in Almaty under the pretext of buying cryptocurrencies. This was reported by the republican Agency for Financial Monitoring (AFM).

The AFM said the group used counterfeit hundred-dollar bills.

“According to the conclusion of experts, the $100 denomination bills of 2006 and 2017 samples, totaling $20600 do not correspond to the samples of banknotes issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States,” the agency said.

Law enforcement is now investigating and the suspects have been taken into custody.

In June, the AFM reported that a certain individual entrepreneur from Almaty was engaged in exchanging cryptocurrencies for fiat funds for commissions from 2019 to 2022. An illegal cryptocurrency exchange operator has been fined.

The Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the world leaders in cryptocurrency mining. The country’s authorities recently introduced new rules to regulate the industry.
