Beware of These 7 Crypto Platforms: Hong Kong SFC Warns
Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) warns investors about seven suspicious crypto platforms that are believed to be involved in fraudulent activities. This warning highlights the risks that investors face in Hong Kong’s rapidly expanding digital asset market.
The SFC has identified the following platforms as potential scams: XTCQT, CEG, BTEPRO, Bitones.org, Yomaex Crypto Market Limited (Yomaex), Bstor (Bstorest), and Taurusemex. These platforms claim to offer crypto trading services and often use social media and messaging platforms to attract investors and encourage them to register.
Once users register and start trading on these platforms, they encounter the real scam. When they attempt to withdraw funds, they are met with warnings or accusations of money laundering or illegal activities. In some cases, their accounts are deactivated. Panic-stricken investors are then coerced into paying large amounts of money under the guise of “taxes” to reactivate their accounts and access their funds.
One particularly deceptive platform, Taurusemex, falsely claimed that its accounts were registered with the SFC to create a false sense of legitimacy.
The SFC strongly advises the public to exercise caution when considering online investment opportunities. They warn against relying on investment advice found on social media platforms and instant messaging apps, urging investors to remain vigilant and beware of fraud.
Local authorities have taken action against these platforms and blocked their websites. The SFC has previously issued similar warnings regarding suspicious entities like HongKongDAO and BitCuped.
Cryptocurrency fraud has been on the rise in Hong Kong in recent years. Last year, the regional police arrested six individuals, including online influencer Joseph Lam, in connection with a crypto fraud case involving JPEX. This scam resulted in losses of over $127.8 million in digital assets.
