PeckShield: Attackers stole more than $70 million in cryptocurrency in May

PeckShield analysts reported that hackers stole $16 million worth of cryptocurrency during May, while unscrupulous developers stole at least $55 million from their users.</div

There were a total of 59 hacks of cryptocurrency platforms during the month. And $4.13 million of the $16 million was returned by the hackers under different conditions. Attackers stole the most from fraudulent schemes. For example, DeFi Fintoch was accused of stealing $31.6 million from users.

Because of memcoins’ popularity, several fraudulent groups created dozens of tokens imitating popular coins. They artificially raised the price of these fraudulent tokens to attract a significant number of investors and then ran a series of scams;

On Bitcoin Pizza Day alone and over the next three days, the suspected fraudulent developers were able to earn tens of thousands of dollars by taking advantage of the interest of gullible members of the cryptocurrency community in meme cryptocurrencies.

CertiK, a cybersecurity and auditing company, estimated that more than $103 million was stolen from cryptocurrency projects during April as a result of hacking attacks. And in March, the losses were even greater – according to PeckShield, then the attackers stole $211.5 million in cryptocurrency and $10.9 million in NFT.
