2024 US Election: ‘Crypto for Harris’ campaign called a scam

2024 US Election: ‘Crypto for Harris’ campaign faces backlash as critics label it a scheme

Leading up to the 2024 US elections, a pro-Kamala Harris advocacy group launched the ‘Crypto4Harris’ campaign with the aim of attracting support from the cryptocurrency community. However, the campaign has been criticized by prominent figures within the crypto industry, including former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan, who claims it is lacking in substance.

Srinivasan went as far as calling the campaign a “SCAM,” pointing to the inconsistent approach of the administration towards the crypto sector. Reports suggest that White House officials held a virtual roundtable with crypto executives to discuss policy issues, but Kamala Harris was not present and had a proxy representation. This further fueled criticism of the campaign’s legitimacy.

The primary concern raised by critics like Srinivasan is that the campaign and the Democratic Party are attempting to win over the crypto community without making any concrete policy efforts. Srinivasan argued that if the Biden administration genuinely wanted to help the crypto industry, they would take action such as removing SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who has been leading controversial regulatory efforts.

Others in the crypto community, like Preston Byrne, highlighted the contrasting approaches of Donald Trump and Harris towards engaging with the industry. They argue that Trump actively sought to engage with the crypto community, while Harris appears distant and uninvolved.

Bruce Fenton, CEO of Chainstone Labs, even went as far as calling the Crypto4Harris campaign “fake nonsense,” pointing out that no industry representatives were given a platform to speak.

The criticism surrounding the campaign comes alongside a virtual White House roundtable where crypto executives met with government officials, including Kamala Harris’ Domestic Policy Advisor, Kristine Lucius. The discussion aimed to foster closer ties between the crypto community and the Democratic Party, particularly regarding regulatory matters. However, concerns remain over the lack of commitment to addressing those concerns.

As the 2024 US elections draw near, these criticisms raise questions about the authenticity and effectiveness of the Crypto4Harris campaign. Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. has hinted at a crypto launch, possibly in the DeFi sector, adding further intrigue to the intersection of politics and cryptocurrencies.
