$500M Bitcoin Buried in Landfill: Man Sues City After Decade-Long Battle for Recovery

$500M Bitcoin Stashed in Landfill: Man Takes Legal Action Against City After Decade-Long Fight for Retrieval

In a unique turn of events, James Howells is now suing Newport City Council after a relentless ten-year struggle to recover a hard drive containing 7,500 bitcoins, which is now valued at nearly $500 million. The hard drive was mistakenly discarded in 2013 and the council has consistently denied excavation requests, citing environmental concerns. However, Howells firmly believes that the data can still be salvaged.

Council Faces Lawsuit Over Misplaced $500M Bitcoin Hard Drive

James Howells, an IT engineer hailing from Newport, Wales, has recently filed a lawsuit against Newport City Council after his decade-long efforts to retrieve a hard drive containing 7,500 bitcoins, which is now worth over $470 million.

The hard drive, unintentionally disposed of at a recycling center in 2013, resulted in Howells losing access to his cryptocurrency. Despite Howells’ repeated pleas for the landfill to be excavated, the council has consistently chosen to overlook his requests. Court documents reviewed by Walesonline reveal that Howells is now seeking £495,314,800 ($647 million) in damages, an amount that corresponds to the peak valuation of his lost bitcoins earlier this year.

Howells has even assembled a team of experts for the £10 million excavation, emphasizing that it will be conducted at zero cost to the council. He has also offered them 10% of the recovered bitcoin’s value, stating, “I’m still allocating 10% of the value for the council even though they have been problematic throughout.” The dedicated bitcoin enthusiast further mentioned:

At today’s rate, that would be £41m, but in the future, it could be hundreds of millions. If they had spoken to me in 2013, this place would look like Las Vegas now. Newport would look like Dubai. That’s the kind of opportunity they’ve missed.

This dispute originated in 2013 due to a misunderstanding with his former partner, resulting in the hard drive being mistakenly thrown away. The value of the bitcoins was less than £1 million at that time, but they have since experienced an astronomical surge in worth. Howells recounted the mix-up, recalling that his partner initially refused to dispose of the bin bag. At that time, he wasn’t overly concerned as he planned to double-check if he had placed the correct hard drive in the bag. However, when he woke up at 9 a.m., his partner had already returned from the school run and taken the bin bag away.

Since then, Howells has dedicated all his time to recovering the hard drive, leaving his IT job and enlisting investors to help finance the operation. He now believes that there is an 80% chance of successfully recovering the data if the hard drive is found. He shared his thoughts:

It is what it is. I could spend the rest of my life working nine-to-five and thinking about it every day. I might as well spend my time trying to recover this simple piece of metal. Until the courts tell me ‘N-O spells no,’ I’m going to keep going.

He added, “Obviously, my finances are not in the best position at the moment. I’m focusing all my current efforts and resources, including money, on the recovery project. I struggle along in the meantime.”

Despite his relentless pursuit, the Newport City Council has consistently rejected Howells’ pleas, citing environmental concerns. However, Howells’ team of experts, which includes the council’s former head of landfill, asserts that they can safely excavate the site using artificial intelligence.
