According to the local prosecutor’s office, the accused and his accomplices took advantage of a vulnerable moment when the victim placed 5 million rubles on the table. Threatening the victim with a pistol, they swiftly stole the money before fleeing the scene of the crime, as stated in the court’s decision.
“They waited until the victim put money on the table in the amount of 5 million rubles, and with the threat of using a pistol on the victim, they stole the money, after which they fled the scene of the crime,” the court decision says.
The court categorized the offense as a robbery, and despite Mirzakhanyan’s denial of guilt, the Rostov resident received a sentence of eight years in a maximum security correctional facility.
In a separate case, the Supreme Court of Mordovia handed a twelve-year prison sentence to the head of the drug control department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for accepting a bribe of two bitcoins, equivalent to more than 2.5 million rubles.
Another high-profile arrest took place earlier this year when the FSB apprehended Marat Tambiev, the head of the Investigative Committee department for the Tverskoy district of Moscow, on bribery charges amounting to 10 million rubles. Surprisingly, it was discovered that the suspect had managed to save 1,032 BTC for his retirement.
