Apple iPhone users with later models are able to use satellite technology to send messages during times of cellular and WiFi outages, such as during the recent Hurricane Helene crisis in North Carolina. This new feature in iOS 18 has been praised by residents as “literally saving lives” in flood-ravaged areas. The satellite network allows iPhone users to communicate when traditional communication networks are down. Additionally, Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite technology is also being deployed in the affected areas, providing communication hardware and unlimited data plans to remote locations. With over 1.7 million customers without power across multiple states, these technological advancements are proving to be essential in emergency situations.
