Apple unveiled a virtual reality headset

  • The unveiling took place at WWDC 2023
  • The price of the Apple Vision Pro VR headset is $3499
  • The new device will hit the market early next year
  • The company has released major hardware for the first time in nearly a decade

At the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5, tech giant Apple introduced a highly anticipated augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) headset called Apple Vision Pro. The move represents a significant transformation of the company’s consumer electronics lineup.

The new device resembles a futuristic pair of ski goggles and features cameras and sensors. It can immerse the user in virtual reality and combine elements of augmented reality with the real world.

Apple has released a headset they call the “spatial computer.”. It has two internal screens with a resolution of 23 million pixels per eye, and they are wired to a battery that can be placed in a pocket. The battery provides up to two hours of operation. On the side of the headset is a dial, similar to the one used on the Apple Watch, which allows the user to switch between dive levels. The device runs on Apple’s new M2 chip, as well as a specially designed processor called R1, which creates a realistic feel.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, this day has been prepared for years. He also expressed his pride in the new headset, noting that now “you’re not limited to the display.”. Another attendee described it as the most advanced personal electronics device ever.

Cook said the headset allows users to “experience, listen to, and interact with digital content as if they were in a physical space.”. This device can be controlled with a combination of hands, eyes and voice, such as fusing your fingers to select or scrolling through content through finger movements.

Worth noting that this is Apple’s first high-profile presentation in nearly 10 years. In 2015, Apple released the latest significant hardware update for its Apple Watch.
