Blockchain firm Match Systems announced on Saturday that it had successfully recovered $68 million of stolen cryptocurrency in what is known as a “dust attack.” The funds were returned to the victim with the help of cybersecurity agency Match Systems and cryptocurrency exchange Cryptex.net. The incident occurred on May 3, 2024, and involved the theft of 1,155.28 WBTC, equivalent to $69.3 million. The victim initially attempted to establish contact with the attacker but was met with silence. However, the attacker unexpectedly reached out on May 9 via Telegram. Match Systems was brought in to trace and recover the stolen funds, which led to a series of complex transactions. The company’s investigators successfully closed in on the perpetrators and retrieved the funds. The attacker’s change in behavior has raised questions within the crypto community. Match Systems advises victims to report theft promptly, as the chances of recovering stolen funds decrease significantly over time.
