British Museum to open a representative office in The Sandbox meta-universe

  • The British Museum and The Sandbox have announced a partnership. As part of the agreement, participants will produce a historical NFT collection.
  • The presentation is scheduled to take place in the museum’s new virtual representation in the meta-universe.

The British Museum will open an interactive space in The Sandbox meta-universe, the site’s administration has confirmed. As part of this initiative, a historic NFT collection developed with French startup LaCollection is scheduled to be unveiled.

“We are working with the British Museum to create a range of digital collectibles that reflect some of the landmarks of the organization since its inception in 1753. It is the first publicly accessible national museum, and now it will become a world museum,” The Sandbox said in a statement.

The point of the project is to open up the museum’s patrimony to users from any corner of the globe, the administration clarified. For the organization, in turn, the agreement provides an opportunity to expand its audience reach.

Remember LaCollection is a licensed partner of the British Museum. Together, the participants have already released three NFT collections.

In the fall of 2021, the museum unveiled a collection of 200 tokens based on the works of artist Katsushika Hokusai. In January 2022, the organization announced the auction of 20 tokenized paintings by brush master Joseph Mallord William Turner.

The third collection is digitized drawings by Italian artist-engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The collection was unveiled in April 2022. This is not the first such partnership by The Sandbox. The platform has previously struck deals with television broadcaster MBC, Hong Kong insurance giant AXA and even the Saudi Arabian authorities.
