Deadline Extended! Argentinians Seize Final Opportunity for Cryptocurrency Amnesty!
In a surprising turn of events, the cryptocurrency amnesty program in Argentina has exceeded expectations, as reported by local exchanges Bitso and Lemon. This initiative allows Argentinians to declare their cryptocurrency holdings to the government without facing any consequences. Sensing the urgency, citizens have started depositing their digital currencies in significant numbers since the announcement of the amnesty.
Carlos Peralta, from Bitso, highlighted a surge in inquiries, indicating a strong likelihood of increased participation before the extended deadline. The Argentine government has now extended the deadline for asset regularization through Decree No. 864/2024, giving people until October 31, 2024. This extension provides fiscal residents in Argentina and non-residents who were previously fiscal residents with the chance to voluntarily declare their assets both domestically and abroad.
The government decree also clarifies that regularized funds up to September 30, 2024, can be withdrawn starting October 1, 2024, without any retention. From November 1, 2024, funds not exceeding USD 100,000 will be exempt from retention, while amounts exceeding that threshold must be kept in special accounts or allocated to authorized investments until December 31, 2025, to avoid a 5% retention.
The surge in participation by Argentinians reflects the government’s goal of bringing fiscal transparency and integrating undeclared assets into the formal economy. Representatives from Bitso and Lemon have reported a significant increase in digital currency deposits, indicating a strong willingness among citizens to comply with the new regulations.
Carlos Peralta mentioned that there had already been a spike in inquiries before the deadline extension was announced, signaling high levels of interest. He commented, “Perhaps now with more time, they decide to enter,” suggesting the potential for even greater participation in the coming weeks.
Juan Pablo Fridenberg, the Director of Public Affairs at Lemon, also noted that September witnessed the highest volume of cryptocurrency deposits in the platform’s history. He stated, “Although we do not know the exact number of users who have joined, as this information is only available to the Federal Administration of Public Revenue (AFIP), we can confidently say that the volume has surpassed that of July by 23%.”
This initiative by the Argentine government aims to establish transparency in the cryptocurrency market, which has traditionally operated with minimal oversight. By encouraging citizens to declare their digital assets, the government aims to integrate them into the formal crypto-economic system, reducing the risks associated with unregulated markets.
The positive response from the public, coupled with the deadline extension, signifies the growing acceptance and normalization of cryptocurrencies in Argentina. It is part of a broader effort to stabilize the financial system and rebuild trust among investors and the public regarding the legitimacy and potential of digital currencies as financial assets.
