Ethereum Plans For Dencun Upgrade: Is This The End Of Roll-Ups?

Ethereum’s upcoming Dencun upgrade is generating both optimism and concern within the layer-2 scaling solutions community. Ye Zhang, co-founder of Scroll, a layer-2 project using zero-knowledge proofs, believes that Dencun has the potential to offer low transaction fees, but also poses challenges for existing roll-up solutions.

Dencun, set to be implemented in mid-March, will introduce the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-4844, which includes a new feature called “blob-carrying transactions.” These transactions allow users to attach large amounts of data to their transactions at a lower cost compared to traditional Ethereum transactions.

Zhang predicts that blob transactions could be 3-5 times cheaper than traditional call data on Ethereum, creating an opportunity for innovative developers to compete with roll-up platforms such as Arbitrum or Optimism. The introduction of Blob inscriptions through EIP-4844 aims to reduce the reliance on layer-2 transactions, potentially challenging the dominance of roll-up platforms.

However, roll-ups still have distinct advantages over blob inscriptions, such as superior scalability and security inherited from the Ethereum mainnet. The impact of EIP-4844 on the layer-2 ecosystem will be closely observed once Dencun is implemented.

In the meantime, Ethereum’s price remains steady above $3,800, with expectations of further gains in the current bull run. Interest in Ethereum layer-2 solutions continues to grow, with over $36 billion managed by platforms like Arbitrum and Optimism, showcasing the increasing adoption and importance of these scaling solutions.
