Ethereum’s ‘Dencun’ Upgrade Goes Live on Second Testnet, With Only One Remaining
Ethereum, the popular blockchain platform, reached a major milestone as its highly anticipated “Dencun” project and its “proto-danksharding” feature went live on the second testnet out of three. This update marks the largest upgrade for Ethereum since early 2023 and brings the platform closer to implementing the revolutionary ‘blobs’ system.
The introduction of proto-danksharding aims to address two crucial aspects of the Ethereum ecosystem. Firstly, it aims to reduce transaction costs for layer-2 blockchains, making them more affordable for users. Additionally, it aims to make data availability cheaper by implementing a new compartmentalized space known as “blobs.”
The Sepolia testnet, where the Dencun upgrade took place, successfully finalized the update after running simulations from 22:51 to 23:10 UTC on Thursday. This achievement follows an earlier attempt on the Goerli testnet, which had failed to finalize initially.
The final Ethereum testnet, Holesky, is scheduled to go live with the Dencun upgrade on February 7. Following this, developers will determine a date for the official activation of Dencun on the Ethereum main blockchain.
Testnets play a vital role in the development process, allowing developers to test and make necessary changes to the protocol and decentralized applications in a controlled environment that has minimal consequences.
Originally slated for release in the final quarter of 2023, the Dencun upgrade promises to be the most significant enhancement for Ethereum since the Shapella upgrade last March, which introduced the ability to withdraw staked ether (ETH). These updates highlight Ethereum’s commitment to continuous improvement and scalability as it strives to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding ecosystem.
