Fraudulent YouTube Channel Exploits Deepfake to Deceive Viewers with Elon Musk Impersonation
A deceitful YouTube channel, posing as Tesla, has garnered a significant following by employing a deepfake of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to entice viewers to a phishing site. The video, titled “LIVE NEWS: Elon Musk joined Trump in a heated debate with Kamala Harris!” and claiming to double their cryptocurrency, targeted unsuspecting individuals looking to amplify their crypto holdings.
Although cryptocurrency scams are commonplace, the livestream, broadcasted by a channel amassing around 31.5k subscribers, masquerading as the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, was particularly audacious. The deepfake Musk spoke for several minutes, touching on typical subjects such as energy concerns related to cryptocurrencies, expressing admiration for Donald Trump, and delving into regulatory matters. He then announced a supposedly groundbreaking event that would revolutionize viewers’ perception of digital currencies, asserting, “What you’re about to witness is an absolutely unique event… but it will completely change your belief in cryptocurrency, and it might even change your life.”
The fraudulent “Musk” further added, “Right now, we will double your cryptocurrency.”
The deepfake video showcased Musk offering to double users’ dogecoin, bitcoin, and ether holdings through an apparent phishing platform.
This video, titled “LIVE NEWS: Elon Musk joined Trump in a heated debate with Kamala Harris!” garnered over 60,000 live viewers, according to YouTube. However, it is worth noting that this high view count may have been due to bot activity.
While the deepfake is somewhat convincing upon casual viewing, closer scrutiny reveals discrepancies between “Musk’s” lip movements and his spoken words. Additionally, the blatant falsehood of effortlessly doubling viewers’ crypto holdings serves as a clear indicator of the video’s fraudulent nature.
Yet, given the current global political climate, which is heavily influenced by mass media and individuals struggling to navigate failing economies, scams like this can easily find their hold when critical thinking is neglected.

At the time of writing, the livestream is still ongoing, and the phishing site linked in the video through a QR code, muskdebate.io, seems to have been shut down. It is worth noting that the genuine Tesla account on YouTube boasts over 2.6 million subscribers, in stark contrast to the imposter’s 31.5 thousand followers.
Although the fake Musk outlandishly claimed that this “epoch-making event” would revolutionize the entire cryptocurrency financial market, while also praising Trump’s alleged support for cryptocurrencies, the 7-hour livestream somehow manages to appear eerily genuine.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a “deepfake” refers to “a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.” As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, it is crucial for crypto users to remain vigilant against scams. Employing critical thinking and recognizing that “if it is too good to be true, it’s probably fake” become imperative in these circumstances.
